Mediation as a method to prevent and resolve conflicts is rapidly gaining ground. Result Mediation is the largest mediation provider in the Netherlands. Our Mediator Skills Training, accredited with the MfN, is an excellent course, which integrates our knowledge and practical experience.

About the Mediator Skills Training

A successful mediator needs a specific set of skills. The best way to develop these skills is by following a high-intensity, total immersion training program. Thanks to our compact training format, you will in a relatively short period of time achieve a deep understanding of what mediation is about. Our mediators and trainers Felix Merks, Elsbeth Snieders and Dominique Maas bring a wealth of experience to the training. You will spend two sessions, each session consisting of 3 days, with them, working on your basic attitude as a mediator and developing your mediation skills.

You will go into all aspects of mediation. You will practice the role of mediator. You will experience what it is like to be the mediator and how mediation affects the litigating parties. You will learn to focus on desired positive outcomes, rather than grievances, and you will help people to discern opinions from interests, so as to move towards a discussion about what is really at stake. You will also learn about yourself, your own attitude in a conflict, your strengths and your pitfalls as a mediator.

Training information

Group sizes vary between 10 and 15 participants. The first session is delivered by two trainers. The second one involves one trainer per every five participants. This allows for maximum coaching and individual feedback.

The training is designed for professionals who wish to become mediators or who are looking to acquire negotiation and mediation skills. Participants come from all walks of like, working in the private sector, business services, government, health, politics and public administration. They include senior executives, managers, HR managers, confidential advisors, complaints officers, mayors, aldermen, lawyers, tax specialists, notaries, judges, organizational consultants, company lawyers, process and project managers.

Course content

Module I  (3 days, on site with hotel accommodation)
Mediation is the continuation of negotiations by two parties, under the auspices of a third party, the mediator. A lot of what is needed in negotiation is also important in mediation. Mediation boils down to an assisted negotiation. This is why, in the first module, we focus on aspects of negotiation which are essential for a mediator. This module deals with the Harvard Negotiation Method, conflict theories and how they apply in negotiations and mediations, communication, creativity, power, influence, basic attitude and its effects, in relation to personal integrity. We explain the theory in broad brushstrokes. Participants get ample time to discover the essence of the theory for themselves in practical simulations and to experiment with it. We use specific exercises and role games, which are then evaluated, with the help of video footage.

Module II (3 days, on site with hotel accommodation)
In this module, we turn our attention entirely to the mediation process. All stages of the mediation process are examined, using six different case studies. As we move through the learning material, we talk extensively about structure, basic attitude and social skills that are required. You will get intense and extensive practice in your role as mediator. In addition, we deal with issues such as registration, continuing education activities, ethics and the institutional aspects of mediation.

Legal Day
During this part of the training, we go into the legal aspects of mediation in depth. We talk about the mediation agreement, the rules and regulations of the Netherlands Federation of Mediators, the settlement agreement, the code of conduct for the mediator and any other relevant legal matters. The goal of this day is to teach you how to naturally embed legal aspects into the mediation process.

Experienced trainers

Your trainers are Felix Merks, Elsbeth Snieders  and Dominique Maas, each with extensive knowledge and experience in their mediation profession.

Felix Merks - Docent MfN Basisopleiding mediationF.G.J.B. (Felix) Merks, LL.M.

Felix Merks is the founder and Director of Result Mediation, the largest mediation provider in the Netherlands with over 1200 cases per year. Felix is an experienced mediator, trainer and consultant in complex negotiations. He specializes in shareholder disputes and in conflicts between corporate companies and government.

As Board Member of the Netherlands Estate Mediation Association, he also focuses on resolving disputes within family-owned businesses. He is Master of Dispute Resolution (University of Amsterdam, cum laude) and has been educated as a trainer in negotiation strategy and skills at Harvard Law School. Before founding Result Mediation he held various commercial management positions with international companies.

D.G. (Dominique) Maas, MSc.

Dominique is an experienced trainer and mediator. She delivers the MfN Basic Mediation Training as well as in-company trainings in the field of conflict diagnosis, conflict skills and negotiation. In addition, she organizes company trainings and workshops geared towards enhancing a positive corporate climate. Dominique’s background is in Business Economics.

After completing her studies, she spent 20 years working in the financial services sector, in different international positions. She gained substantial experience, initially as a consultant, subsequently as team manager, in strategic, operational and financing issues, both in the public and in the private sector. She goes to the source of conflict, more often than not a misalignment of parties’ understanding and expectations. From her manager’s experience with conflicts between clients and among staff, Dominique has derived a natural intuition for how to bring parties together.

Since 2014, she has been focusing entirely on conflict management. Drawing on her knowledge and expertise, she mediates in business, employment and team conflicts. She is convinced that in her role as a mediator, besides being able to offer professional process monitoring, her added value lies in her professional experience. Dominique is also a certified trusted person in the field of offensive behavior and personal integrity.

E.D. (Elsbeth) Snieders, MSc.

Elsbeth is a senior mediator and trainer with an economic background. She studied Macroeconomics at Groningen University and started her career as a financial analyst with General Electric Company. After 4 years with General Electric, she moved to the Central Bank of the Netherlands, where she held different positions and was involved in a number of change management processes.

In 2007 she obtained her post-graduate qualification as Legal Mediator/Appropriate Dispute Resolution (ADR) specialist from the Amsterdam ADR Institute, and from there starting working as a mediator. In 2009, she registered with the Singapore Mediation Centre and became active there as a mediator, assessor and coach. She conducted regular mediations there for the Subordinate Court. In Singapore she also worked as a consultant with Pluris Value, a consultancy specialized in negotiation and change management.

Since 2013, Elsbeth has been working as a mediator en trainer in the Netherlands. Her key competency areas are business and employment disputes. Besides mediation, Elsbeth specializes in managing and preventing conflicts. She has shifted her focus increasingly towards conflict prevention and resolving team cooperation problems. She delivers the Mediator Skills Training as well as tailor-made training for companies and schools/centers of education.

Giving Back

Result Mediation believes that what we teach in this training is particularly pertinent in certain parts of the world where being able to deal constructively with conflict can actually save lives. That is why, through our giving program, we train a selected group of individuals in a post-conflict area on a pro bono-basis. In June 2018, Felix Merks and Elsbeth Snieders trained a group of politicians in Georgia.

Training Credits

Upon completion of the training, you will receive a certificate of participation worth 49 training credits.

Entry requirements for MfN register

Entry requirements

The MfN Register (Mediation Federation of the Netherlands, formerly the NMI) enjoys legal authority and wide market recognition in the Netherlands. It records and certifies professionally qualified mediators. If you want to register as an MfN practitioner, the following sequence of requirements applies:

  • You have completed the Basic Mediation Training (6 days, plus one day of legal training)
  • You have successfully taken the theory exam
  • You have passed the assessment
  • You have applied for a background audit and can produce a letter of good conduct in

Two years

Once you have completed the Basic Mediation Training, you have two years to prepare for the theory exam and the assessment, apply for your letter of good conduct and register with the Quality Foundation for Mediators (Stichting Kwaliteit Mediators, SKM), responsible for maintenance and updating the MfN Register.

Theory Exam and Assessment

The theory exam and the assessment are both administered by Testing and Assessment Center Intop. Skills are assessed in a live role play simulation or through video.
Either way, the candidate must demonstrate the same level of performance. Performance is evaluated using the scoring method developed by dr. H.C.M. Prein and two other assessors. For more information on the exam and assessment, please go to the Intop website.
